How to Train for HYROX in Colorado: A 12-Week Plan
HYROX is not CrossFit. It is not a marathon. It is eight kilometers of running broken into one-kilometer segments, with a workout station between each one. Same eight stations, same order, every race, every city.
That predictability is the whole opportunity. You know exactly what is coming. Most people still train for it wrong.
The eight stations, in order
1,000m SkiErg. 50m sled push. 50m sled pull. 80m burpee broad jumps. 1,000m row. 200m farmers carry. 100m sandbag lunges. 100 wall balls.
One kilometer of running before each. The run is not the filler between stations. The run is the race.
The mistake almost everyone makes
People train the stations and neglect the running. Then they hit the fourth kilometer with a heart rate they cannot bring down, and the wall balls at the end become a survival exercise instead of a finishing kick.
Roughly half your total race time is spent running. Train it like it is half the race.
The second mistake is training stations fresh. You will never do a sled push fresh on race day. Every station arrives on legs that just ran a kilometer. If your sled work always happens rested, you have trained for a race that does not exist.
What altitude does to your race plan
Centennial sits around 5,500 feet. Denver-area athletes racing at sea level get a real advantage. Athletes training here for a race here need to accept that their splits will look slower than the numbers they see online.
Do not chase sea-level paces in Colorado. Train by effort and heart rate. Your body is doing the same work at a slower clock, and the aerobic adaptation you build here travels well.
A 12-week structure that works
Weeks 1 to 4: build the engine
Three to four Zone 2 runs per week, conversational pace, 40 to 60 minutes. Two full-body strength sessions. One session per week practicing station technique unfatigued, because technique is easier to learn fresh.
This block is aerobic base and movement quality. It is not exciting. It is the reason you do not fall apart in week ten.
Weeks 5 to 8: start compromising
Now you add compromised running: run one kilometer, do a station, run another kilometer. This is the specific adaptation HYROX rewards and it cannot be faked.
Keep one Zone 2 long run. Add one interval session. Keep strength at twice a week, heavier and lower volume.
Weeks 9 to 12: race simulation and taper
Run half-simulations: four rounds of run-plus-station at race effort. One full simulation around week ten, then back off.
The last ten days are taper. Volume drops, intensity stays. You cannot build fitness in the final week, but you can absolutely spend it.
The three stations that decide your race
Sled push. The single biggest time gap between mid-pack and podium. It is leg drive and body angle. Practice with the real weight, not lighter.
Burpee broad jumps. Where races go to die. Small consistent jumps beat big heroic ones. Find a rhythm you can hold for all 80 meters.
Wall balls. One hundred reps on completely empty legs. Break them into planned sets before you start. Deciding mid-set is how you end up resting twice as long.
Where to train for HYROX in Colorado
You need three things in one building: sleds and real running space, the actual competition equipment, and coaching that understands compromised running.
Elite Performance Center is Colorado's certified HYROX affiliate. We have the indoor sprint track, the turf, the sleds, and race-specific programming built around the exact eight stations.
See our HYROX training programs, or look at what comes with membership — including the recovery services that make a twelve-week block survivable.
Start where you are
You do not need to be fast to start. You need twelve weeks and a plan that puts the run first, trains the stations tired, and respects the altitude you live at.
The athletes who finish strong are not the ones who trained hardest. They are the ones who trained specifically.
